Dongfang Meiren Tea – also known as Champagne Oolong Tea Vietnamese iteration of the prized Taiwanese Oriental Beauty Tea. Would you care to drink bug-bitten tea? The answer is yes. Please let me explain why. The tea cricket, Jacobiasca Formosana thrives during warm months, contributing to Vietnam being an ideal habitat.  The natural inclination of the tea cricket is to jump from leaf to leaf.  The natural defense mechanism of the leaves produces a hormone. During the oxidation process in production, the high level of these hormones translates to the deep floral and grapey character we then later taste in our cup.  Champagne Oolong Tea is a highly oxidized tea with an aromatic sweetness that lingers long after. It’s made in the style of Taiwanese oolong tea often carrying the same name and is well-loved for the signature aroma of rose and Muscat grape. Known for its fruity and fragrant characteristics, what is compelling about this batch is the subtle touch of wintergreen aromatics that fill the air once you pour hot water onto the leaves. Smell the brewed tea leaves again after it’s cooled down and you might also pick up some of the pineapple or passion fruit notes that we’re enjoying.

I tried their lapsang souchong and loved it! It was smooth and absolutely not bitter. They give you refrigerator magnet with instructions on the water temperature ideal for each type of tea so you never over heat your water. I also love their practice of sustainable sourcing and packaging.

I happened to be passing by the Symphony of Leaves pop-up shop in downtown Atlanta today on my birthday, when Renee invited me in for a cup of tea. I’m not a big tea drinker, but as today is my birthday, I decided to go in to the kind request. I had maybe the most delicious cup of tea I’ve ever had. It was naturally sweet and not bitter. Reneé, explained to me how ethically and wonderfully sourced and paid out from the bottom to the top the production process was for Symphony of leaves. I highly recommend this tea. Reneé was as genuine and nice as any business owner could be. I hope to see this brand of tea succeed!
